Pizza Ovens: Which Kind Is Right for You?

Pizza is one of the few things that basically all Americans can agree on. We pretty much all like it. Even those of us who are gluten-free, vegan or living with other dietary restrictions that limit the intake of its deliciousness still love pizza.

Pizza is so universally loved that we can order it from just about anywhere in the country. It’s easy and fun to make at home in our kitchen, too. It’s become such a staple food in our diet that we’ve even expanded to cooking it in outdoor pizza ovens in Kansas City.

An outdoor pizza oven is a great tool for hosting backyard get-togethers. You can have pizzas ready to cook and serve, or invite guests to participate in the fun and make their own from scratch.

Not only are outdoor pizza ovens great for cooking, but they can add a decorative element to your backyard. There are several options for customization, from material to shape to color. They can even be part of a larger outdoor kitchen setup for a complete outdoor cooking and dining experience.

While pizza cooks just fine in a conventional oven, there’s really nothing like a good pie that’s been cooked in a high-heat pizza oven. A pizza oven cooks at temperatures up to 1,000 degrees, which is one of the main differences between a pizza from your favorite restaurant and one you cook at home.

You can level the playing field by getting a pizza oven of your own. Since they do get so hot, the best option is to have one installed outdoors by a professional hardscape company.

Different ovens for different pizzas

When it comes to how your pizza is cooked, it boils down to what kind of fuel you’re using to heat it. In this regard, there are three different types of pizza ovens in Kansas City: coal fired, wood fired and gas-fired.

Each will cook a pizza just fine, but each type of oven has a certain type of pizza that it cooks best. Again, it’s absolutely possible to cook pizza in any one of these types of ovens, but if you have a favorite style, here are some differences to consider:

  • Coal fired: If you like New York-style pizza, with chewy crust that’s slightly crispy but still foldable, a coal-fired oven is your best bet. While these ovens do get extremely hot, the coals generate a lower flame than wood fired ovens.
  • Wood fired: If you’re a fan of thin, Neapolitan-style pies, go for a wood-fired oven. These don’t get quite as hot as coal-fired ovens, but they generate big flames that can cook a pizza in as little as 90 seconds.
  • Gas fired: A gas-fired pizza oven is the most versatile of the three mentioned here. It heats up faster and can also burn wood, if you so choose.
